2008 Merlot, Corona Vineyard, Mt. Veeder (Napa Valley)
As with our previous releases of Cabernet Sauvignon from Roberto Corona’s (our Vineyard Manager’s) Mt. Veeder vineyard, this Merlot is not your typical, everyday Merlot – the mountain-grown influences are evident. The beautiful, crystal clear, ruby red color, though clearly lighter than most Cabs is darker than most Merlots, as substantiated by a confirming hint of lavender around the rim.
The nose is an enticing cornucopia of cherries and ripe strawberries accented by a defining cedarbox and herbal character reminiscent of sage and mint. The mouthfeel is plush and velvety, with supple tannins to provide pliant structure. Rich red fruit flavors envelope the palate with a hint of cola nut toward the back of the palate, leading to a pleasurably smooth and lingering finish.
This wine has already aged in bottle for about a year, so it’s enjoyable now, though thanks to the mountain influence, it has the structure to continue to evolve and gain elegance for 5-8 years. Enjoy with your Thanksgiving turkey, roasted with rosemary, sage, and thyme spices, and drizzled with a light mushroom broth gravy; try it today with the Manitaropita!
