2007 Cabernet Sauvignon, Corona VineyardMt. Veeder (Napa Valley)As with our 2006 release of Cabernet Sauvignon from Roberto Corona’s (our Vineyard Manager’s) Mt. Veeder vineyard, this Cab is not your typical, everyday Cabernet. The mountain-grown influences are clearly evident. From the deep ruby red (almost maroon) color to the intoxicatingly bold aromas of black currants, violets, and sweet tobacco, tinged by streaks of cedar and vanillin spice, this wine compares with some of the best Napa Valley wines from Diamond Mountain, Howell Mountain, and Spring Mountain, yet in a unique style that only comes from Mt. Veeder’s southwestern Napa mountain top. On the palate, sumptuous layers of juicy fruit explode to reveal gobs of dense mocha-laced currant, wild berry and blackberry characteristics, with a touch of licorice and exotic Indian spice, leading to an extragavantly lengthy oak-edged, somewhat sweet crème-de-cassis finish. This wine has already aged in bottle for about a year, so it’s enjoyable now for its power and fruit-forwardness, but will also reward those who wish to cellar a few bottles for the long-term (15-20 years). Pair it with a juicy New York strip or a grilled tri-tip! |
