2009 Shari's RoséContra Costa CountyOur 2009 Shari's Rosé is in one way different from all previous editions: in addition to our usual components of Grenache, Syrah, and Mourvedre, this year we added a significant quantity of Pinot Noir. However, like previous versions, this wine offers a beautiful expression of floral aromas, a crisp refreshingly dry mouthfeel, with gobs of delicious, richly integrated fruit that envelops the palate and leaves you longing for another sip. This year, Shari's Rosé consists of a Saignier blend of 30% Grenache, 28% Syrah, 18% Mourvedre, and 24% Pinot Noir, all sourced from Contra Costa County vineyards, most (everything but some of the Mourvedre and half the Pinot) from vineyards in Moraga! The must (freshly crushed juice) for this wine was only exposed to the skins for about 12 hours before being bled off, so the resulting color is a beautiful coral pink – not too light, not too dark. The nose tantalizes with sweet ripe strawberry that evolves to feature more complex cranberry/pomegranite nuances with a hint of flint/minerality. On the palate, the Grenache and Pinot components stand out, exhibiting bright juicy red fruit flavors of raspberries and dried cherries, yet still stimulating the taste receptors with crisp, dry acidity. The finish is lengthy and clean, but substantial enough to remind you that this is not a light-weight rosé. This wine should pair well with flavorful, though not too rich or spicy foods. Try it with dry aged Pecorino cheese or Ahi Tartare drizzled w/ young extra virgin olive oil, sprinkled with toasted sesame seeds on a bed of crispy fried shallots. Serve Chilled; best to drink now and throughout the next couple years. |
