2008 "Right Bank Blend"Lamorinda (Contra Costa County)In 2008, as with the 2007 version, our Right Bank Blend is assembled predominantly from Cabernet Franc grown at the Captain Vineyard in Moraga. However, unlike our previous vintage we used all five of the major red Bordeaux varietals to round it out and bolster structure, replacing most of the Merlot component with meaningful percentages of Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot, and a smattering of Malbec. The resulting wine, after aging nearly 18 months in a once-used French oak barrel, is now showing beautifully, reflecting the refinement, balance, and sophistication of a French Bordeaux blend (though perhaps in a style more reminiscent of the great Cab Franc-based wines from the Loire), yet with some great rustic California character – this may be a wine that defines what Lamorinda Bordeaux is all about. In the glass, this wine displays a beautiful deep crimson color, with a hint of lavender at the edge of the glass. The nose is initially somewhat reserved, but with a little time in glass and air exposure, it opens up nicely revealing very expressive aromas of classic Cabernet Franc characteristics, including bell pepper, tobacco, and saddle leather, nuanced by scents of rose petal, dried herbs, and a trace of black olives. The mouthfeel is firm yet surprisingly sensuous and satisfying, with an expansive mid-palate of dark fruits (blackberry, black cherry, cassis), and a slight herbal overtone, evolving to show hints of smoke, menthol, and espresso bean. The finish is long and gratifying as the complex flavors coalesce harmoniously and the discernable yet pleasing tannins linger, enticing you to take another sip or bite into a juicy, thick steak. For a classic pairing with this red wine, try a rack of lamb with a Merlot glaze and carmelized onions, seasoned with a pinch of dried mint leaves, and drizzled with a cherry reduction sauce on a bed of sautéed mushrooms and braised winter vegetables. This wine is drinking beautifully now, especially if given a chance to breath, and will continue to evolve, rewarding those who can wait 5-7 years. |
