2007 Syrah Bennett Ridge VineyardRussian River ValleyFor the 4th year in a row, we were fortunate enough to obtain some of the fine Syrah fruit from Bob and Kris Bennett's Healdsburg vineyard. The 2007 vintage may be the best we've made yet. The color of this wine is a glass-staining purplish indigo, suggesting the combination of both power and finesse. The nose is loaded with a core of dark fruits with a hint of earth, framed by a band of licorice and black pepper. There is a speck of gaminess, typical of cool climate Syrah, but nowhere near the proportions of our previous incarnations of this wine. In the mouth, juicy blueberries and blackberries are emphasized in a well-balanced, rich mid-palate, though not overly mouth-coating. The finish is refined and clean, with some tannins present, but not overwhelmming. This wine should pair extremely well with flavorful, lean meats such as venison medallions or lamb tenderloins in a berry reduction with grilled portobello mushrooms. Great to drink in its youth, it should also be drinking well over the next 3 to 5 years. |
